Bladderwrack-seaweedBladderwrack or Fucus vesiculosus is  a commonly used weight loss algae that is grown on the coasts of the North Sea, the western Baltic sea, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  It was the original source of iodine, discovered in 1811.  People quickly came to realize that this algae could treat goiter, a swelling of the thyroid gland related to iodine deficiency.  Not long afterwards, in the 1860s, it was claimed that bladderwrack, as a thyroid stimulant could increase the metabolic rate and since then, it has been featured in numerous weight loss remedies.  Most people could use the iodine that bladderwrack contains and for those with low thyroid activity, it will stimulate the thyroid and in turn, will accelerate the metabolism helping with loss of excess weight.

Aside from helping with thyroid problems, bladderwrack lowers cholesterol levels and clinical studies have shown that it may even have the ability to inhibit the HIV virus.  It lowers blood sugar levels and helps regulate the glucose level and clinical studies suggested it may have the same properties than a laxative and can be used for easing constipation too.  Plus, bladderwrack contains fucoidan, which has blood thinning properties and may improved blood flow in the body.  Since it may contain various levels of iodine which may be different in each batch, levels of iodine should be listed on the product label to avoid possible overdose and be sure your product is clean as this algae may also contain toxic heavy metals like arsenic and mercury.   Use of bladderwrack in those who don’t have an iodine deficiency may be a problem so be sure to check with your doctor before you start taking a supplement with bladderwrack for weight loss. Remember that you should commit to a consistent exercise regimen and adhere to a well balanced and healthy diet for the best effects of bladderwrack.
